Jude Hutchen (aka Judey Woo)’s artwork explores how human interior life meets its social context.  Following her experience working as an Art Therapist as well as years working in community art projects, including post war Bosnia, she is strongly influenced by the psychological experience and political relationship of the individual in society.

She currently lives in Bristol and also works for a Circus training school which has reinforced her incorporation of ideas around performance into her practise: through the presentation of character and costume as well as exploring the social/ political roles in popular performance (Circus as well as Mexican Wrestlers).

Her 2D work is predominantly graphic illustration, often incorporating collage of found materials.  Her sculptural work is developed in response to the materials of the specific context and often involves assemblage of found objects. She also designs and delivers creative workshops and events ranging from therapeutic, issue based or engagement work to participatory activities facilitated by comedy characters.

She was invited in 2014 to work as the Artist in residence with the Department of Archaeology at the University of Aberdeen and their Northern Picts project. This resulted in a week of public creative workshops and a mobile exhibition exhibited in several locations. As part of her exploration of the popularity and resonance of Lucha Libra/ Mexican Wrestling within contemporary Mexican culture and politics she collaborated with Gallery Ishuakara in Oaxaca, Mexico as a participant of their vibrant residency programme.  Her work was featured in the ‘Kolaps’ publication, a journal promoting creative cross cultural collaboration across former Yugoslavia in 1998 & 1999.

She has presented her work in solo exhibitions in Edinburgh (2004) and Aberdour (2009) in Scotland as well as Bristol in England (2011).  Her work has also been exhibited internationally at Mostar International Festival of Culture in Bosnia Herzegovina (2002 & 2003) and Oaxaca, Mexico (2015).
